About the Author

David Cressy was born in England and educated at Cambridge, but built his career in the United States. He has taught at colleges and universities in California, Ohio, and New Mexico, and has won numerous fellowships and awards. His work is driven by curiosity about the relationships of central and local authority, elite and popular culture, official and unofficial religion, and ordinary men and women, a curiosity that ranges from kinship to book-burning, from cross-dressing to Gypsies. When not engaged in historical research he may be found exploring the deserts and beaches of the American West.

Well worth reading several times over

This is a great book, particularly because the level of scholarship required to about a broad range of ordinary people is so rare. Cressy applies his 30+ years of careful research and sophisticated thought in ways that both build upon his previous work and open wonderful new lines of inquiry.

Hace diez a�os, las academias de la lengua espa�ola pensaron un Quijote para todos. Hoy se reedita —en edici�n limitada— para conmemorar los cuatrocientos a�os de la muerte de Cervantes.

En los a�os 2015 y 2016 confluyen dos aniversarios cervantinos. A la celebraci�n del IV Centenario de la Publicaci�n de la Segunda Parte del Quijote (2015), le seguir�, en 2016, la conmemoraci�n del IV Centenario de la Muerte de Miguel de Cervantes. Como ocurri� hace m�s de una d�cada, las academias de la lengua espa�ola y la editorial Alfaguara se unen a esta celebraci�n con una reedici�n de este cl�sico universal dirigida a todo el �mbito hispanohablante.

Esta edici�n cuenta con un nuevo pr�logo, escrito por Dar�o Villanueva, director de la Real Academia Espa�ola (RAE) y presidente de la Asociaci�n de Academias de la Lengua Espa�ola (ASALE), especialmente para la ocasi�n. Se completa con un glosario formado por siete mil palabras, locuciones, frases proverbiales y refranes, explicados seg�n el significado preciso que tienen en el texto cervantino.

La primera edici�n de este Quijote se convirti� en un gran �xito de ventas, sin precedentes en una obra cl�sica. M�s de tres millones de ejemplares, distribuidos en Espa�a y Am�rica, la convirtieron en la m�s difundida de la historia. A conseguir su car�cter divulgativo y su orientaci�n hacia un p�blico diverso y no especializado, contribuyen especialmente las notas contextualizadoras de la obra, preparadas por Francisco Rico. Tambi�n se incluyen una serie de estudios complementarios, escritos por algunos de los principales expertos en el gran libro cervantino.

As�, Mario Vargas Llosa analiza la modernidad del Quijote en �Una novela para el siglo xxi�; Francisco Ayala reflexiona sobre la construcci�n de los personajes de la novela en �La invenci�n del Quijote�, y Mart�n de Riquer analiza la obra en el contexto biogr�fico del autor en �Cervantes y el Quijote�. Por su parte, Jos� Manuel Blecua (�El Quijote en la historia de la lengua espa�ola�), Guillermo Rojo (�Cervantes como modelo ling��stico�), Jos� Antonio Pascual (�Los registros ling��sticos del Quijote: la distancia ir�nica de la realidad�), Margit Frenk (�Oralidad, escritura, lectura�) y Claudio Guill�n (�Cauces de la novela cervantina: perspectivas y di�logos�) abordan distintos aspectos relacionados con la lengua espa�ola en la obra cervantina.

A todos ellos se une en esta ocasi�n el actual director de la RAE, Dar�o Villanueva, que ha querido �aprovechar la oportunidad de oro que me ofrece hoy la nueva salida de esta edici�n […] para dar una explicaci�n —mi explicaci�n— de algunos de los porqu�s del tan alto reconocimiento que el Quijote ha obtenido desde la fecha de su publicaci�n hasta hoy, as� como su palmaria modernidad�, antes de recordar que el Quijote fue la obra elegida, en 2002, como la mejor novela de todos los tiempos, por delante de En busca del tiempo perdido, de Proust, y de Guerra y paz, de Tolstoi, en una encuesta realizada por la Asociaci�n de Escritores de Suecia entre cien autores de todo el mundo.

Ten years ago, the Academies of the Spanish Language conceived of a Don Quixote for everyone. Now, it is being re-released—in a limited edition—to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Cervantes’s death.

2015 and 2016 bring with them two special Cervantes anniversaries. The celebration of the 400th Anniversary of the Publication of the Second Part of Don Quixote in 2015 will be followed in 2016 by the Commemoration of the 400th Anniversary of Miguel de Cervantes’s Death. As they did more than a decade ago, the Academies of the Spanish Language and Alfaguara unite for this celebration with a re-edition of the universal classic directed at the whole Spanish-speaking world.

This edition boasts a new prologue written specially for the occasion by Dar�o Villanueva, the director of the Real Academia de la Lengua Espa�ola (RAE) (RAE) and president of the Asociaci�n de Academias de la Lengua Espa�ola (ASALE). It is complemented by a glossary made up of seven thousand words, expressions, phrases and proverbs, each explained according to its precise meaning in Cervantes’s text.

The first edition of this Quixote became a huge sales success, unprecedented for a classic work. More than three million copies, distributed in Spain and the Americas, made it the most widespread in history. The contextualizing notes about the work, prepared by Francisco Rico, contribute to its educational character and its orientation toward a diverse and non-specialized public. It also includes a series of complementary studies, written by some of the primary experts in Cervantes’s consummate book.

As such, Mario Vargas Llosa analyzes the modernity of Don Quixote in “A Novel for the 21st Century;” Francisco Ayala reflects upon the construction of the novel’s characters in “The Invention of the Quixote;” and Mart�n de Riquer analyzes the work in the biographical context of the author in “Cervantes and Quixote.”

For their part, Jos� Manuel Blecua (“Don Quixote in the History of the Spanish Language”), Guillermo Rojo (“Cervantes as a Linguistic Model”), Jos� Antonio Pascual (“The Linguistic Registers of Don Quixote: The Ironic Distance from Reality”), Margit Frenk (“Orality, Writing, Reading”), and Claudio Guill�n (“The Course of Cervantes’s novel: Perspectives and Dialogues”) deal with different aspects related to the Spanish language in Cervantes’s work.

Joining all this is the current director of the Real Academia de la Lengua Espa�ola (RAE), Dar�o Villanueva, who wants to “take advantage of the golden opportunity that the release of this new edition offers […] to give an explanation—my explanation—of some of the reasons for the high recognition that Don Quixote has gained from the date of its publication until today, as well as its clear modernity,” before reminding us that Don Quixote was the work chosen in 2002 as the best novel of all time, even ahead of In Search of Lost Time by Proust and War and Peace by Tolstoy, in a survey conducted by the Swiss Writers’ Association of 100 authors from around the world.

The Collection

In 2004, coinciding with the celebration of the 400th Anniversary of the Publication of the First Part of Don Quixote, the Real Academia de la Lengua Espa�ola (RAE) and the Asociaci�n de Academias de la Lengua Espa�ola began a project of editions of the great works of literature in Spanish. Conceived as a line of limited-circulation special commemorative editions of the great Spanish-language classics of all time, these works are published and distributed around the Spanish-speaking world by Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial under its Alfaguara imprint.

To date, in addition to Don Quixote, the collection includes editions of Cien a�os de soledad by Gabriel Garc�a M�rquez, La regi�n m�s transparente by Carlos Fuentes, Antolog�a general by Pablo Neruda; En verso y prosa. Excelente libro, muy buena edici�n digital

Este libro es una maravilla. Recuerdo que siempre me pon�an a leerlo en mis clases de Espa�ol cuando estaba en el colegio, y le daba largas porque no me gustaba. Es cierto que el lenguaje es un poco antiguo, pero la historia aqu� contada es tan ingeniosa que supera con creces todo lo que yo haya conocido. Ahora que encontr� esta edici�n para Kindle, me puse a leerlo de nuevo y es fascinante.

Esta edici�n digital me gusta por varias razones. La primera es que es directa, no tiene gran introducci�n y el lector puede comenzar a leer las aventuras desde el primer momento. El �ndice funciona bien, aunque en el lector para computadora se ve un poco extra�o, pero logra su cometido. Tiene adem�s las cartas iniciales en donde se especifica la tasa del libro, acompa�ada de la carta del rey y de varios poemas muy interesantes.

No puedo decir m�s. Un cl�sico.
�Y pensar que fue escrito hace unos 400 a�os!

While it is a pretty book, color pictures

This review is for the Susaeta edition of Quijote. While it is a pretty book, color pictures, it is incomplete. It only has 28 of the 52 chapters for book 1, and 27 of the 74 chapters of book 2. Apparently this is a children's version, but Amazon has it listed with the standard version of the book. My biggest complaint is that Amazon has them all grouped together, so I thought I was getting a different version with a hard back cover. The reason I'm giving it 2 stars is because Amazon screwed up, not the publisher or seller. This book needs to be listed completely separately other version with a description that says it is an abridged version for children.

Este libro es la versi�n de Susaeta para ni�os. No es la versi�n completo. S�lo tiene 28 de los 52 cap�tulos del primer libro y 27 de los 74 cap�tulos del segundo. Amazon ha puesto esta versi�n con las dem�s versiones y necesita separarlas. Tiene dibujos bonitos en color, pero debe decir en la descripci�n que es una versi�n abreviada.

Could have been better!

This classic contains many antiquated words, therefore an abridged audio book version was welcome. Unfortunately, this production has flaws that prompted me to give up three quarters into it. Firstly, such a heavily abridged version should have concentrated on the main story, i.e. the adventures of Don Quijote and Sancho Panza, rather than get bogged in the many secondary stories. For instance, it contains too much of the soap-opera-like story of Don Fernando and Luscinda, while the episode where Don Quijote frees the convicts is only hinted at. In many places there are such gaps in the telling of these digressive secondary tales that you get lost. Replacing ancient word forms ("formosura") by their modern equivalents ("hermosura") was a good idea but why not do so throughout instead of only in the beginning? In fact there is a drop in quality towards the end and the undisputed talent of the speakers was wasted when they kept reading out sentences in an intonation out of step with their meaning ; or when they rendered whole sentences unintelligible by missing words (verbs, prepositions etc.). Had the speakers got bored with their job in the end? Were they running out of time or out of budget?

Plagued by typos.

Apparently this is the UK edition. Apparently someone search-and-replaced all the American spellings with UK spellings. Unfortunately, this did not work out that well. For example, they replaced the word "fall" with "autumn," so now onion plants autumn over instead of falling over. Also many other similar issues. Way to be sloppy, translator. I would recommend the other edition, especially if you are finicky like me. Otherwise a fantastic book.

He spoke at the historic 1963 March on Washington and became chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. The nation, tuned to the nightly news, watched in horror as state troopers clubbed him viciously, fracturing his skull as he led a march in Selma, Alabama, in 1965. Today, he's the only member of Congress who can be proud of having been carried off to jail more than 40 times. With the help of a collaborator, journalist Michael D'Orso, this remarkable man has written a truly remarkable book. Lewis, an Alabama sharecropper's son, went to Nashville to attend a Baptist college where, at the end of the 1950s, his life and the new civil rights movement became inexorably entwined. First came the lunch counter sit-ins; then the Freedom Rides; the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and Lewis's election to its chairmanship; the voter registration drives; the 1963 march on Washington; the Birmingham church bombings; the murders during the Freedom Summer; the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party; Bloody Sunday in Selma in 1964; and the march on Montgomery. Lewis was an active, leading member during all of it. Much of his account, written with freelancer D'Orso, covers the same territory as David Halberstam's The Children?Halberstam himself appears here briefly as a young reporter?but Lewis imbues it with his own observations as a participant. He is at times so self-effacing in this memoir that he underplays his role in the events he helped create. But he has a sharp eye, and his account of Selma and the march that followed is vivid and personal?he describes the rivalries within the movement as well as the enemies outside. After being forced out of SNCC because of internal politics, Lewis served in President Carter's domestic peace corps, dabbled in local Georgia politics, then in 1986 defeated his old friend Julian Bond in a race for Congress, where he still serves. Lewis notes that people often take his quietness for meekness. His book, a uniquely well-told testimony by an eyewitness, makes clear that such an impression is entirely inaccurate.

YA-Lewis was active in the American civil rights movement almost from the beginning. He was there during the lunch-counter sit-ins in Nashville in 1960, took part in the Freedom Rides of 1961, and, as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, spoke at the March on Washington in 1963. The list goes on. Like all memoirs, this one has its biases and limitations. However, for the insider's insights it provides, it is an indispensable resource.

The best memoir I've ever read

I don't like memoirs. They're usually self-serving, ego-driven and full of cheap shots. Walking With the Wind is none of those. John Lewis and his co-author have crafted a marvelously told tale of the civil rights movement. Perhaps no one but Lewis, King and Abernathy could write about the movement with this scope. Lewis was there for all of it, from jails, to voting, to sit-ins. And he describes it beautifully with the perfect pace.
I think the book's best chapters are the ones that cover what happened in Selma. I've read a half-dozen histories of the civil rights movement and none of them have recounted the Selma story better than Lewis does here.
Lewis also gives us insight into several other movement leaders. Not even Taylor Branch (the Pulitzer-winning historian and journalist) tells us about Jim Bevel with this much color. Lewis tells fascinating stories about Diane Nash, Stokely Carmichael and the relations between SNCC and the other movement-leading groups. It's the kind of inside baseball a good memoir delivers.
I'm thrilled that I read this book. It has greatly contributed to my understanding of the civil rights movement.

A great American triumph

Uplifting. Eloquent. Brilliant. Inspiring. Patriotic.
John Lewis' life story is the story of a genuine American hero. The depth and strength of his moral conviction shows what character can accomplish. This book, just as this man's life, cannot be overrated or over-appreciated.
John Lewis, as a young man had the calling. His deeply religious upbringing ultimately led him to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and work with Rev. Martin Luther King. He sat in where Black people were not wanted. He demanded for Black people the rights to which all Americans have an expectation. He walked the walk at a time when it was not only unpopular, but downright death defying.
He moved from the pulpit to the halls of Congress, where he serves to this day.
As inspiring a work as I have ever read. Ought to be required reading by everyone in the Nation for a deeper understanding of the power of the American spirit.

AWESOME AND INSPIRATIONAL!

Each night I can't put "Walking With the Wind" down! Reading the autobiography of Congressman Lewis' life and work in the civil rights movement brought tears to my eyes and a heaviness of heart to realize that people hate their fellow man so much that they'd commit such acts of violence based solely on the way someone looks!
Whenever I read a book like this, I think to myself: "Thank God someone went before me because I couldn't have done it!" The tremendous amount of bravery these people had is so inspirational and heart wrenching! Not knowing your enemey is one thing, but these people knew the enemy and what they were capable of and yet, they still persevered and triumphed.
As an African American I am so proud of all those who sacrificed so very much, even sometimes making the ultimate sacrifice with their lives. Every American needs to realize the great courage these people exhibited to make this land a better place for us all.

Revealing look at Tibetan monastic education

George BJ Dreyfus has written a wonderfully informative account of Tibetan monastic education that ends on something of a flat note. After conceding that scholasticism, the study of sacred texts, leads to “believing what you are supposed to, despite your best efforts to question,” Dreyfus asserts in his closing paragraph that it nevertheless results as well in “an ability without which deeper understanding is impossible.” Nothing in his account appears to lead such a conclusion. On the contrary, one of his Tibetan teachers notes that while Dreyfus understands the words, he doesn’t grasp the meaning. “We could even defeat [in debate] a person who had realized emptiness!” His teacher knows that realization is available even to those without this level of scholastic ability. If you ever thought you wanted to study at a Tibetan monastery, read this book. You might change your mind.

Extremely Valuable Inside Look at Ge-luk Monasticism

Georges Dreyfus is a scholar of truly prodigious learning. In this book he reflects on his unique experience studying in various Ge-luk-ba monastic education centers in the Tibetan exile community in India, particularly at Drepung Loseling and the Institute of Dialectics. Dreyfus displays his great erudition in a fashion that is illuminating and not pedantic.
Most of the book is occupied with a historical and philosophical analysis of the Ge-luk scholastic approach to Buddhism. In particular, he focuses on two tensions within Ge-luk-ba. The first is the tension between exegesis and debate. The second is the tension between doctrinal allegiance to canonical texts and free and open inquiry into ideas. The picture of Ge-luk-ba scholasticism that emerges from Dreyfus' careful analysis of these twin tensions is a conservative institution that produces brilliant, and sometimes daring, thinkers.
This work is extremely valuable to scholars and dedicated practitioners alike, because it provides a unique insider's view of Tibetan Buddhist monastic education. Dreyfus is not only well steeped in the tradition he analyzes; he also maintains his scholarly rigor and critical acumen.
Dreyfus explains many practical aspects of Tibetan Buddhism that are not frequently discussed in Western scholarship. For example, I found it very illuminating to learn that, for scholars, Lam Rim texts and the related "Grounds and Paths" Prajnaparamita literature are not typically treated as literal, programmatic instructions on meditation courses. Rather, they are regarded as presenting systematic, overarching depictions of the Buddhist philosophical universe. This book is filled with important observations of this type.
If there is a weakness to this book (other than its rather unfortunate title), it is admittedly one-sided in its sphere of interest. It struck me as highly significant that the word "compassion" scarcely appears in this book. I believe it can be read in part as an apology for a style of monastic engagement, which places an enormous emphasis on study and debate, while not formally encouraging meditative praxis. This book focuses on the development of prajna on the basis of study and reflection, but strongly underemphasizes the soteriological aspect of Buddhism.
Of course, it is the author's prerogative to focus on their area of interest, and Dreyfus has done so with a magisterial understanding of the issues in question, carefully honed by decades of research.

Incisive look at the Gelugpa monastic training

Dreyfus is to be congratulated for having written a very readable and penetrating look into the training in the Gelugpa tradition. It portrays a fascinating journey deep into the worldview and mind of a very different culture, which unveils some interesting, fundamental assumptions of both his own Western culture as well as that of the Tibetan. It is an honest and balanced account, which sometimes identifies painfully troubling aspects, sometimes wonderful features of this most profound tradition. He also makes enlightening and relevant reflections, based on Western thinkers, which sheds refreshing perspectives on the monastic life. The book is of particular interest to those who have done some reading, and perhaps practice, in the Tibetan tradition and who are interested in getting a better look at, for instance, debate in practice.

Hit the spot

I needed my fix and got it. This is an older revision than what is at SOTIC now, but still all relevant and useful. It covers basic marksmanship, Ammunition, TD, Range E, mil sketch, range cards, and a lot more advanced skills, mission planning, employment, and applications of snipers and spotters than your basic US Army Sniper FM. This goes perfectly with the rest of my manuals: SEAL course, Marine Scout Sniper, US Army FM 23-10, and SEO. If you like fieldcraft, want more advanced concepts of sniper employment, interested in SO missions, like to shoot, been to SOTIC or ever wanted to go: Buy this book. You will not be sorry. The appendixes alone are awesome, great for making copies for the ol' range book.

Good information but very poorly laid out for free stuff

This manual contains valid and useful information but is very poorly laid out. The table of contents and the index contain not one single page listing, Duh! Additionally all the figures are at the end of the chapter, hand drawn, hand written figure numbers or just plan missing. But the kicker is this and most of the sniper/target interdiction books are available in pdf format for free. Contact me at my email address. This is so typcial of the publishers Paladin Press, Delta Press, etc.

This is THE best book on the subject with the USMC S/S manual only half a step behind. SOTIC contains a more thorough review of mechanics, ballistics calculation and trajectory theory. As for the gentleman who wrote a review on 26 April 2000"The real deal folks", I agree with his thoughts on the book. However, Mr. A Reader, I would appreciate you telling me and the world what "sniper" team you operated with in the Special Forces- being that there are no sniper teams in the organizational echelon. You must be thinking of the USMC. There are however SOTIC trained individuals(usually 18B) who can collaborate with the A team(s) and/or operate independently. If you were in fact on an A/B/C TEAM, what might that teams organizational designation be? One more bit of information for all of you RESPECTFUL enthusiasts of Special Operations: the SF, SEAL's, PJ's, or any other USSOCOM units are not considered "black organizations".
