Incredibly deep may be too deep for an average reader to understand..

First off, the original title of this book is "The Art of Being Yourself". That's the title of the original Russian publication. I have no idea why they changed the title in the American publication. Anyway..

The first time I read this book was back in 80-s when I still lived in the former USSR, long before my family and I immigrated to the US. It was an eye-opener back then and it is still an eye-opener now when I am re-reading it 30-something years later. Now, when I am a much older and mature person I can see and appreciate the depth of the author's visions of human mind and behavior, which I wasn't able to do in my youth. One thing I can tell is that I haven't yet encountered any mental health professional, who would have such a profound, holistic and unique understanding of human nature than Vladimir Levi.

Yes, the book is designed as a self-help guide as it has specific exercises intended to increase your self-awareness and self-control.They helped me a great deal back when I was young and read the book for the first time and I hope they will be helpful this time again. However, if you are someone who just looks yet for another populist version of self-help that instructs you on how to be happy, "successful" and all that non-sense, this book is not for you. All the techniques and exercises in the book only work in the context of your general awareness of yourself and life around you. In order to benefit from the book you need to be able to think deeply, you have to be someone who likes to reflect, contemplate, question everything and willing to de-program yourself from the cultural, familial and other types of mind-programming. This is not something that people, and especially people in the US, like to do. So, if you are not interested in reflecting and questioning your current belief system, the book may not be for you.

Good Update From First Edition

This is a very readable and practical book that focuses only on incompressible semi-implicit methods. It is an introduction, it moves at a slower pace and covers less ground than the Ferziger & Peric book, but what it does address is very well explained. I own both the first and second edition. I had reviewed the first edition 10 years ago and was only moderately impressed because it was similar to Patankar's book but published 15 years later. The 2nd edition has added a lot of material which advances the topic quite a bit from the 1st edition.

My main complaint about the first edition was that it focused on Cartesian structured grids which is pretty dated. The new version has a chapter on collocation of variables and how to handle the pressure gradient in the continuity correction step. Additionally it explains how to account for convection and diffusion in generalized non-Cartesian coordinates. It would be nice if storage and solution methods were explained for the iterative solver needed for an unstructured mesh but that aside the material presented in this new chapter is very well explained.

Another nice touch is explanation of multigrid techniques as an iterative solver. The authors allude to implementing multigrid into the outer iterations but do not drill down on the topic.

There is a chapter explaining the introduction for turbulence modeling but it is not complete enough to implement without supplemental sources.

This book gives very detailed step by step explanations of many things in the first edition, detailed examples of calculations and results are shown which really illustrate the method and where the pitfalls are. There are less examples for the newer material, but it is still explained carefully. The material is very accessible. One could use this book by itself to write a very basic code based on this method. I could imagine if the authors were to make a third edition where turbulence, multigrid and unstructured solution techniques were addressed with the same depth as some of the other topics that the book could become a real institution.

An excellent start to CFD

An excellent place to start for the recent engineering graduate. Leads on from the basic numerical techniques, fluid theory and matrix solutions you learn in your undergraduate courses.
This book will allow you to begin to use CFD codes.
In order to develop a deeper understanding of the codes you are using, or to write your own codes the next step is Ferziger and Peric's "Computational Methods for Fluid Dynamics" AND Wilcox's "Turbulence Modeling for CFD".

Excellent beginner's guide to process CFD

For those were interested in getting into or needing to developing the skills to perform computational fluid dynamics, this book is an excellent place to get started. It Is the required text for my undergraduate college mechanical engineering CFD course, and was selected by our MIT graduate teacher. The book comes up often is hard to read at certain points, and the terminology gets confusing, but these problems don't apply to more serious students. The book itself is not teach you to use any particular software, i.e. fluent, but rather teaches you how CFD is done, how to determine the problem variables, and how to model it with mathematical equations. The book gives you all of the equations, but you'll need a good background in calculus math to understand and solve were looking at (if you're naturally good at math this might not apply). I have completed course yet but from what I've seen in the book, the book treats this subject as seriously as you read. So if you skim it lightly you can still understand or solve some of the problems, but you'll miss the more complex situations and the meaning of why things are done a certain way.

A Jar of Dreams is set in the 1930s during The Great Depression. The location is Berkeley, California and our main character is Rinko Tsujimura, an 11- year old Japanese girl that is having a hard time fitting in. Rink does not like her name (she wishes it were easier to pronounce and one that people would remember), and she does not like her hair or her face, the clues that give away her Japanese connection. Rinko wishes she could be just "like everybody else" as she is tired of her classmates teasing her teasing at school and the awful stares she and her family receive from others when she is out in public with her family.
The setting is so important for the reader to understand as it explains the treatment Rinko and her family are victims of and defines the issues the family is faced with. Japanese immigrants faced pressure and discrimination within their communities and neighborhoods. Many Americans were resentful of their presence and did not trust them. In addition, many felt threatened by the economic competition from Japanese companies.

The story is centered around a problem Rinko's father is faced with that could financially affect the family. The family is in the process of trying to determine the best way to move forward, when Aunt Waka, Rinko's mother's sister, arrives from Japan, with some wisdom that not only reminds Rinko of the importance of her cultural heritage, but the importance of standing up for what one believes in and pursuing their dreams.

A Jar of Dreams is a middle grade reader, but this book not just for middle readers. In this era, the theme is familiar and the plot is easy for young children to follow. The content is strong and engaging that adult readers will enjoy the storyline. Though Rinko is the main character, and it is expected that she well grow from her experience, there is character development for all the characters in the story. The storyline also demonstrates how one person's action can affect others.

Author Yoshiko Uchida did a great job writing a plot centered around a conflict that affected each character in a unique way. Though the story is told through the eyes of Rinko, who many adults would assume is too young to understand what is going on, it is evident in Rinko's tone that she is very well aware of the social climate and can perceive the hurt and frustration the conflict brings to her family and other members of her community. This makes it easy for the reader to relate and connect with her. The structure of the story is developed and well written.

As a child born in America to parents that immigrated to the United States. I shared many of the feelings Rinko talked about. I can remember as a young child telling my teachers to call me "Dorothy" instead of my name, because my name was the subject of harsh jokes on the school playground. I read this story with my daughter because I wanted her to understand the importance of cultural heritage and identity. This is a good book to use to engage young readers in discussions regarding immigration and stereotypes, especially with what is transpiring in the U.S.as depicted in the media.

I truly recommend this book. Again, it is an easy read- roughly 136 pages. Uchida has two other books that follow Rinko. They sit in my Amazon cart now, ready for purchase.

According to UCLA professor Nabokov (Native American Testimony), the places that American Indians call sacred may be as wondrous as "cliffs spilling with waterfalls" and as humble as "caves splattered with bat excrement." What makes them important is not postcard-perfect beauty but the beliefs a group has about "what lies within or beneath what the eye can see." This excellent volume presents the "biographies" of 16 such places, from Maine to California. Through them, Nabokov surveys a wide range of Native American spiritual practices and reveals how intrusions into Native Americans' land have also constituted assaults upon their religious beliefs. Indeed, many of the assaults continue to this day: after the disruptions caused by war, disease, missionary activity and forced relocation came those of hydroelectric dams, agribusiness, parking lots and extreme sports buffs. Nabokov's deeply informed text is enhanced by first-person accounts of his visits to the locations and by his spirited commentary on the writings of other ethnographers, naturalists, linguists and anthropologists. Sentimental clich�s and monolithic views are dismantled along the way. Each of Nabokov's biographies can be savored separately; taken together, they demonstrate both that there is "more to some American places than [meets] the eye" and that Native Americans have known that for a very long time. Nabokov present 16 "biographies of place," each of a habitat illustrating the bond between North American Indian cultures and their environment perpetuated by myths, legends, and rituals. He maps out some of the thousands of mounds in the Midwest thought to express cosmological beliefs and recounts multiple visits by an anthropologist in the 1930s to a Canadian Ojibwa enclave "caught in a time capsule" manifested by its all-consuming ties to the natural world. An account of the 1906 trek made by Indians from Taos Pueblo to Blue Lake opens a window onto the significance of that glacial pool, from which current residents believe their earliest ancestors emerged. Nabokov's case for the return of the Black Hills to the Lakota and Cheyenne is based on his explication of a book of 400 drawings by an Oglala Sioux who, 100 years ago, depicted hills, caves, and rock art still considered sacred today. Chapters are arranged by the four cardinal directions and use four major court cases in which Indians fought against destruction of key sacred places to bring together both past belief and modern controversies surrounding these places. Relevant today

I discovered Wright ("Black Boy"---his bio) while volunteering as a student group discussion "facilitator" at our downtown charter high school. I wanted to learn more of him in "Conversations" and did. Much of the book gives answers (why he preferred) for his expat days in Paris, France where he died. I can't understand why he isn't quoted (and read) more in these days of awakened racism in the U.S. Many of the comments (on Amazon) label him as a "whiner" but I disagree. He liked his polemic/literary style and NEVER viewed himself as Black, but merely another human trying to survive on the planet.

A Fascinating Portrait of a Corporate Legend

I had read bits and pieces of this book, and wanted to read the whole story. I couldn't put it down! Andrew Tobias goes way behind the scenes to capture the man who was Revlon; the biggest and most flamboyantly-run cosmetics empire...before Estee Lauder , there was Charles Revson and Revlon. He was loathed, feared, repudiated and sometimes admired---the stories in this book are almost surreal in content. It is a lesson in history and how things used to be; before all of the politically-correct manure that passes for advertising in today's world. I strongly recommend this book; characters like Charles Revson do not exist anymore; they are, though, part of the American folklore and what Madison Avenue and the really big corporations used to be. It's How to Succeed in Business by Really Trying!

About the Author
Sarah Simblet teaches at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, University of Oxford, and at the Royal College of Art in London. She has studied and worked in Oxford, Cheltenham, Heidelberg, and Madrid, and was awarded her PhD by the University of Bristol. Her drawings are in national and private collections, including the Royal Academy of Art in London and the Ashmolean in Oxford.

Having this book is like having a botany art museum at home.

[[VIDEOID:moY4ROOS7AC1ZT]]Botany for the Artist is a gorgeous reference for plants. The pages are filled with a mix of photographic plant portraits and Sarah Simblet's detailed sketches. Everything's beautifully laid out. The exquisite illustrations in the book are mainly black and white.

As with typical DK books, it's also filled with educational information. Every part of the plant is explored, from the roots, stems, leaves, flowers to the fruits. They are provided with scientific names and also interesting information on how they grow and their functions.

The drawing lessons are short two-page guides at drawing found throughout the book. There are tips on capturing likeness, establishing the composition, adding colours and details. Also included are selected features on Renaissance botany artist.

This is an excellent resource for botany artists. Having this book is like having a botany art museum at home.

Amazing resource!

Amazing resource, breath-taking imagery and photos. Excellent survey of Botany for the artist. This shouldn't be confused with a college level botany reference. This is botany for poets. But it covers the material a botanical illustrator must know without getting mired down.

I do wish they had covered a bit about the frequent confusion over tree identification and the tricky genetics that can baffle botanists as well as laymen. That really isnt much of a gripe to have.

In 1981 Mary K Gaillard became the first woman on the physics faculty at the University of California at Berkeley. Her career as a theoretical physicist spanned the period from the inception in the late 1960s and early 1970s of what is now known as the Standard Model of particle physics and its experimental confirmation, culminating with the discovery of the Higgs particle in 2012. A Singularly Unfeminine Profession recounts Gaillard's experiences as a woman in a very male-dominated field, while tracing the development of the Standard Model as she witnessed it and participated in it. Bemused

I do not know why Gaillard wrote this book, and I do not know why I read it (with pleasure). I guess the author wanted to stress the difficulties of breaking into an all-male enclave. I guess I wanted to learn something about the emergence of the Standard Model. I liked the book, although I may be biased by the fact that I am an academic, and the book is an odyssey of academic schmoozing.
I certainly did not have to be told about the male domination of academia forty years ago. In all my years as an undergrad at the University of Pennsylvania and the Sorbonne, and my graduate training in economics at Harvard, I never had a female instructor. The only books I read by women were in economic history and development economics. When I was a first-year Assistant Professor at Harvard, I received a letter inviting my wife to join the Harvard Wives Club. Needless to say, there was no Harvard Husbands club.
Gaillard (which means "hardy" in French) spends lots of time on her personal life, which is okay with me. She also talks a lot about faculty politics and how she was mistreated. Okay. But I don't know an academic who couldn't relate with relish stories of being mistreated. Really boring. Who cares?
I recommend this book because it found it fun reading, I did learn some history of science, and Gaillard is a pleasant writer with a sunny disposition.

A Dose of Modern Physics and Perserverence

Some modern atomic physics knowledge is helpful. I found the history of standard model physics presented at about the right physics level for me, a former high physics and chemistry teacher. The thread of chauvinism Gaillard presents throughout the book is enlightening, but also disturbing.
