MacDonald, Tom Thomson, and Frederick Varley, the Waddingtons embarked on an artistic expedition that carried them across Canada from sea to sea to sea. Their search for the secret of the innovative spirit has resulted in this delightfully diverse production that brings the reader to the very spots where some of Canada's greatest art was conceived.
Richly illustrated with reproductions of the original artwork by the Group of Seven and augmented with expressive text and absorbing photographs of the actual locations where these legendary paintings were created, the Waddingtons have created a journal of enduring images that document the lush landscapes, rugged countryside, and wondrous waters that help define us as Canadians. "[A] love note and a thank you letter to the Group of Seven and a travelogue for our spectacular Canadian wilderness. . . . From the Inside Flap
Nearly a century ago, a group of artists travelled into the bush beyond Canada's towns and villages to capture a raw, terrible beauty. Armed with sketchbooks, brushes, and paints, they set off into the heart of the wilderness to reinterpret the landscape in a modern way.
In July of 1977, Jim and Sue Waddington began their own voyage of discovery. Determined to locate, document, and photograph the actual landscapes that inspired and influenced the brushes of A.Y. Jackson, Franklin Carmichael, Arthur Lismer, Lawren Harris, A.J. Casson, J.E.H. MacDonald, Tom Thomson, and Frederick Varley, the Waddingtons embarked on a 36-year expedition that saw them trek from one end of the country to the other and back again. The result is In the Footsteps of the Group of Seven, an ambitious book that stretches from the northern reaches of Ontario to Beechey Island in the Arctic, from Nova Scotia to the Alaska Highway. Travelling into thick forests, across bleak tundra, and along ancient canoe routes to visit the sites where some of Canada's defining paintings were conceived, the Waddingtons bring us face to face with the landscapes that enlightened and enriched this renowned group of artists.
Featuring more than 175 photographs, archival images, and reproductions of the original works of art, In the Footsteps of the Group of Seven — part travel guide, part itinerant art exhibition, part memoir — is a stunning tribute to the artistic muse.
About the Author
While on a canoe trip in 1977, Jim and Sue Waddington located the place that was the inspiration for one of A.Y. Jackson's paintings. This marked the beginning of their quest to find more of the special places chosen by the Group of Seven and Tom Thomson. Their search began in Killarney Provincial Park, but they followed the painters throughout Ontario, to the east and west coasts of Canada, to the Yukon and Northwest Territories, and, most recently, to Nunavut. They have learned about the painters' habits and their techniques. Sue is an artist — a traditional rug hooker. Her rug-hooking designs have won awards in the Burlington Art Centre and from the Ontario Hooking Craft Guild. Jim is the photographer with no awards but plenty of rewards. They enjoy canoeing, camping, hiking, and the sport of orienteering. Although they have found some painting sites in cities and towns, they particularly enjoy the search for those sites that may be reached only by canoe

Really interesting book!
By Eric Nelson Smith
The pictures are great, both the reproductions of the paintings by the Group of Seven, and the modern photographs from the sites where they were painted. Equally interesting is the text, which filled in a lot of background information on the Group of Seven, which may not be known quite as broadly on the south side of the Canadian border, provided some very interesting commentary about the style of the painters, and provided a fascinating account of the development of the authors' growing interest to set about tracking down the location of these painting sites over a period of decades. Also it is interesting to learn how the scenery has evolved in the century or so since the Group of Seven was active, and access, land use and population centers have evolved. A very rewarding book to read.
