Another interesting book by the same author.

I recently read Indick's "Psychology for Screenwriters" and enjoyed it, so I took a chance and bought this book. Though some of the same theories are covered, Indick actually takes a very different perspective in this one, approaching movies from a film analysis approach rather than from the point of view of the writer. It's an excellent companion to "Psych for Screenwriters," or just on its own. There were also some very original psychoanalytic takes on the religious symbolism in movies, the female hero in Disney pictures and the psychosexual aspects of monsters in horror movies. Also, the chapters on Carl Jung's archetypes and Otto Rank's "Myth of the Birth of the Hero" really helped me understand Joseph Campbell's theory of the "Hero's Journey" a lot better. All in all, a very worthwhile book for anyone who wants to gain a deeper understanding of film.

This book is a continuation of my Motivation and Personality, published in 1954. It was constructed in about the same way, that is, by doing one piece at a time of the larger theoretical structure. It is a predecessor to work yet to be done toward the construction of a comprehensive, systematic and empirically based general psychology and philosophy which includes both the depths and the heights of human nature. The last chapter is to some extent a program for this future work, and serves as a bridge to it. It is a first attempt to integrate the "health-and-growth psychology" with psychopathology and psychoanalytic dynamics, the dynamic with the holistic, Becoming with Being, good with evil, positive with negative. Phrased in another way, it is an effort to build on the general psychoanalytic base and on the scientific-positivistic base of experimental psychology, the Eupsychian, B-psychological and metamotivational superstructure which these two systems lack, going beyond their limits. It is very difficult, I have found, to communicate to others my simultaneous respect for and impatience with these two comprehensive psychologies. So many people insist on being either pro-Freudian or anti-Freudian, pro-scientific-psychology or anti-scientific-psychology, etc. In my opinion all such loyalty-positions are silly. Our job is to integrate these various truths into the whole truth, which should be our only loyalty.

Content incomplete

Very poor quality re: content. Missing bibliography, Maslow's footnotes, an editor's preface, any history of editions on copyright page. Can't find stated copyright holder/publisher online. I'm a Maslow fan, so I like the work; it is just an incomplete edition.
Amazon is refunding my money. I will purchase the John Wiley & Sons third edition, and be more careful to research book editions in the future. I gave it two stars in case these things don't matter to you.

Maslow is one of the most prominent behavioral psychologists in the country. In this book he elects to veer away from the
pathology of the mind and rather reflects on our positives. Our ability to give love, support and nurturing and the positives of
steering away from either/or and having an attitude of that AND this. Suggesting that cooperation is infinitely better than the duality
that many of us practice. You will come away with a new way of looking at things and a refreshing look at new attitudes with whatever
you deal with. Relationships with others leads the pack.

Life Affirming

We've almost all heard of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. This book describes it, though, the triangle diagram is nowhere present.

The best way i can think of to describe this book is that it is life-affirming. By that, i mean that Maslow recognizes that we have legitimate needs that must be met in order to be a healthy, growing person - he affirms the legitimacy of these needs, that repressing them can lead to becoming neurotic but meeting them in a healthy manner can enable one to self-actualize. I've underlined something on just about every page. He affirms "that our deepest needs are not, in themselves, dangerous or evil or bad," (p. 122) which he compares with "a special tendency in Western culture...to assume that these instinctoid needs of the human being, his so-called animal nature, are bad or evil. As a consequence, many cultural institutions are set up for the express purpose of controlling, inhibiting, suppressing, and repressing this original nature of man," (p. 126). The book gives a good understanding of what it means "to become more fully human," (127). I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and felt like it was very therapeutic to do so.

Memory power

My ten-year old son was having trouble memorizing his math facts. Repetition didn't help. I wanted something fun and that would get him interested. After doing some research I discovered this book on Amazon. I showed him the picture on the front and got a laugh, good start. The book breaks down all of the numbers and puts them into story form so that the brain retains the memory of how they go together. Easy to learn and use. I'm impressed, his seven-year old sister is picking up the facts too. His teacher at school was also intrigued and purchased the book.

Awesome Book! Great Technique! SUCCESS!!

We got this book, after my 3rd grade daughter's extended math teacher recommended she needed help with some of the basics with multiplication tables. She (daughter) thought it would be "fun" to see if her 5 year old sister could pick up the ideas and learn her "times tables", even though she is not yet in school and has no frame of reference for multiplication. IT WORKED!!!

The 8 year old now seamlessly cruises through her multiplication: went from 50% in 10 minutes (time limit) on standardized test to 100% in 5 mins after only one exposure to the techniques and materials. (We altered the plan a little since she already knows much of the material: used the stories and pictures to reinforce the less-easily known multiplication facts.)

The 5 year old now can recite the answers to several multiplication facts: walks around the house saying "skate times skate is sticky floor" (another of her favorites: "tree times surfin' is denty sun"!!)

Now their 3 year old brother is wondering what he's missing out on and insisted that he have his own copies of the number pictures and equation pictures to color and "learn" -- he calls it his "work" and sits down with his own pages when his 8 year old sister works on homework in afternoon :)

Thanks so much! Highly, highly recommend this book and the techniques within.

Without a doubt this is the best teaching resource I have ever bought. Worth every penny and more. I home tutor and have used it with children aged 7 to 16 and it has been successful every time. They all love it and all knew their complete tables in just a few weeks. This has made so much difference to their confidence. I wish there was something similar for number bonds too. I didn't use the books for 5's (as most children work those out so quickly having learned to count in 5's from an early age)and also 2's (ditto) and 9's because I teach them the finger method. This meant they weren't inundated with the picture/story method. This was appropriate as I was teaching children who sort of knew their tables (or should have) so were in a catch up mode. If I was teaching tables from scratch I would have used all the methods. I just can't recomment this book enough!!!!!!!

Inventive book with ideas for playing old games in new ways

This book contains alternate rules for multiple board games. You take the parts from games you probably already have around the house - Scrabble, Monopoly, Clue and Trivial Pursuit, and remix and recombine them into over 20 different new games. Some of the ideas are kind of lame, but some of them are brilliant, and using a Clue board to play Zombie Mansion is one of my favorite games ever. I didn't buy the paperback version, but the ebook, but I'm sure the content is the same.

The book, "Boardgame Remix Kit", purchased from Aamzon, was, in fact, exactly as described, but that was it. I had hoped that there was something additional that wasn't in the description. No such luck, only enough content, so that I wouldn't feel deceived. The word, "Kit" seems a little large for what it was. The words, "stencil", or "profile", might have been better.
