Outstanding!! Important work!

This book shows how Mark frames his gospel around Isaiah and specifically Isaiah's new Exodus theme. This is an important work and needs to be read by scholars and serious students of the gospel of Mark. One cannot read this book and come away without a fresh perspective on Mark and what Jesus himself was intending by his words and actions. Watt's takes seriously Mark's use of the OT and the context of all quotes and allusions. His reasoning is spot on and therefore his conclusions should all be taken seriously. There is much here, but some of the things Watts deals with are the servant songs in relation to Jesus, of course the exodus theme, Jesus healings and their link to Isaiah 35, and how the cleansing of the temple is thematic of Isaiah. Comparisons are made between Isaiah 6:9f and Mark 4:12 in order to bring out more fully the parable of the sower. Also, the Beelzebul controversy is expounded upon in light of Isaiah.
Watt's deals very well with the so called "way" section of Mark. This section is shown to be bracketed off by the healing of the blind man that at first sees men "as tall as trees" and the healing of Bartimaeus. Sandwiched in between is the way section of Mark that deals with the disciples continued inability to grasp who Jesus really is. The climax of this section is the confession of Peter that Jesus is "the Messiah, the son of the living God." In short the entirety of Mark is taken up in light of Isaiah.
A note of caution would be that this book is not written for a lay audience and would be difficult to read without knowing Greek and Hebrew. Watt's assumes his audience knows German and French as well and will at times write a couple of sentences in German without providing an English translation of this. Outstanding

The book helps explain difficult problems in the Gospel of Mark through an Isanic framework. Watts book is significant because it comes to the important conclusion that the gospels, especially the Gospel of Mark, needs to be seen from an OT perspective and not from a Hellenistic perspective. After reading Joel Marcus' book, "The Way of the Lord," I would have to say that it is by far the superior of the two. Marcus deals succiently with the material and deals with more issues that Watts does.

First of all, the service and shipping were great--got the material before the expected date and all items checked out as advertised.
The book itself is a great scholastic work connecting segments from Isaiah and Malachi to Mark's account of Jesus. For the intermediate and advanced student of Biblical Studies, it provides a fascinating connectivity between the Testaments. Chapters 1 and 2 while important information are somewhat tedious in the discussion of Markan scholarship. But after that the reader gets a wealth of information and connections on the New Exodus theme.
Glad I purchased it!

About the Author

David More is a leading botanical illustrator who has previously illustrated guides on European and North American trees. John White had a long career in the research division of the Forestry Commission before retiring in 1996. He has contributed to many publications on the subject of northern hemisphere trees.

Beautiful book, very informative, enjoyable to read; hardiness ratings are dubious

I really enjoyed reading the book and examining the illustrations. It wasn't clear to me prior to purchase that the illustrations are not photographs, but after reading this book, I rather like the illustrations, as they capture the salient features of the tree bark and leaves in ways photographs might not. The range and anatomy of each tree is methodically described, and many cultivars of each species are described as well, which was a pleasant aspect. This book provides some horticultural advice, which is my principal interest, but no more than you could find with a Google search. For example, there is no information on transplant ease, seed stratification/scarification techniques, or major pests (other than mention of chestnut blight or dutch elm disease). I also found the hardiness ratings difficult to follow, since they are in percentage rather than zone, and furthermore I found some of those hardiness ratings just plain wrong, which was surprising for this second edition printing. For example: Bur Oak and Chinkapin Oak are listed as having "50% hardiness", which translates to -4F according to the table on P18; however, I've had both trees in my yard for years in USDA zone 4b, with regular -25F winter lows resulting in no injury. In fact, Bur Oak is typically rated to zone 3 (-40F). There were several other such examples, all of which served to make me doubt the hardiness accuracy for species I knew nothing about yet was interested in trying in my zone 4b location, such as some of the eastern European oaks. eg. Hungarian Oak was also rated at 50% hardiness (like Bur Oak), but turns out to be hardy only to zone 5 (-20F). Despite the hardiness, I still really enjoyed this book, and regard it as one of the best tree guides of worldwide scope that I've come across.

About the Author
Roxy Peck is Emerita Associate Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics and Professor of Statistics Emerita at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. A faculty member at Cal Poly from 1979 until 2009, Roxy served for six years as Chair of the Statistics Department before becoming Associate Dean, a position she held for 13 years. She received an M.S. in Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Applied Statistics from the University of California, Riverside. Roxy is nationally known in the area of statistics education, and she was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award in Statistics Education at the U.S. Conference on Teaching Statistics in 2009. In 2003 she received the American Statistical Association's Founder's Award, recognizing her contributions to K-12 and undergraduate statistics education. She is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and an elected member of the International Statistics Institute. Roxy served for five years as the Chief Reader for the Advanced Placement Statistics Exam and has chaired the American Statistical Association's Joint Committee with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics on Curriculum in Statistics and Probability for Grades K-12 and the Section on Statistics Education. In addition to her texts in introductory statistics, Roxy is also co-editor of "Statistical Case Studies: A Collaboration Between Academe and Industry" and a member of the editorial board for "Statistics: A Guide to the Unknown, 4th Edition." Outside the classroom, Roxy likes to travel and spends her spare time reading mystery novels. She also collects Navajo rugs and heads to Arizona and New Mexico whenever she can find the time.

Excellent!

I drew on the probability chapter a great deal in my introductory master's level course on biostatistics for public health students (I had gotten a preprent of this chapter at the Joint Statistical Meetings). Dr. Peck has a real gift for making concepts clear, and I am quite eager to see the full text!

Works well.

Nice book with an appealing layout that once you get used to it is very user friendly. Could really do with a glossary. I am very disappointed that it doesn't have one. The examples are mostly good but some of the later ones like in chap. 10.3 are really confusing and not at all user friendly. The answer key is sometimes incomprehensible when trying to use it to reverse engineer a problem. Again this is more true with the later sections of the book.
