Succinct intro to UML for BAs and other process modelers

This slender volume (~100 pp.) provides a succinct introduction to UML (and BPMN) from the perspective of a business process modeling initiative. I see this book as having three main strengths:

1) It is non-threatening. By focusing on BPM and not attempting to be encyclopedic or unnecessarily deep, the content is kept to a manageable size for new-comers to the discipline. It can be digested and understood in a relatively short time frame. I see this as important because many potential audiences including business stakeholders are unwilling to commit to reading a huge tome.

2) Just enough UML. Although there are plenty of books that teach UML, much of what is taught is of little use to a BA -- especially an entry-level BA. The UML taught here is precisely targeted for its usefulness in performing key BA tasks. Instead of showing capabilities targeted at software developers, the approach is truly developing a Business Process Model.

3) Results oriented. This book describes how to produce an effective Business Process Model -- not just techniques, but how techniques can be used to produce something of value to the business. In my experience, there are many business problems that can be solved by following the guidelines in this boo, because a proper BPM process can clear away the cobwebs that prevent stakeholders from approaching the business with a shared understanding. In some cases documenting (or simply inventorying) business processes can stabilize business activities. Of course in many cases the process will reveal (or support a process for discussing) changes that can improve the business.

My Recommendation:
This is a wonderful book to give to an entry-level BA. If I ran a PMO, or a BA Center of Excellence, I would issue this book as part of an on-boarding process. It is short enough that it can be absorbed quickly. I would include a process for measuring the new recruit's absorption of the material. Follow-up with a brand-new BA would include supervised generation of BPMs within the organization. Note: this (and the book under review) does not address requirements development or requirements management, which I think is best held off on until the new-BA has reached journeyman status.

For intermediate-level BAs:
Some Journeyman BAs might have no experience with BPM, or perhaps picked up all they learned 'on the go', to those readers, this book's lucid presentation will put it together for them quickly. On the other hand, those comfortable with BPM would be better served by a different text which digs into esoterica and edge cases.

For Sr. BAs:
I don't really see how a SR BA could could have avoided BPM, however some SR BAs might be comfortable only with older notation systems (ERD, Data-flow Diagrams, & Flow charts). This book does a good job in showing how specific UML diagram types can be used for various BPM sub-processes. For those readers, this book could be much better than a general purpose book about UML (which are usually aimed at documenting software designs).

A great to-the-point tutorial on practical process mapping

I am a business analyst working in the healthcare and pharma industries. Recently I was assigned to document a number of our business processes. I have drawn some Visio diagrams before but I was looking for a better way to do the work. A search on Amazon turned up this book by Dr. Schedlbauer. I heard him speak before at a conference and knew that he was an expert, so I decided to buy the book and see his approach.
His book describes his technique called PROMAP. I found that PROMAP was a pretty good framework to get me organized and to point out that process modeling is more than just drawing Visio diagrams. I particularly liked the other types of models and his advice on how to elicit procedures from my business partners. His discussion of linking processes to rules was great - it made my business partners real happy; they could see which rules applied to their processes.

The book is short and to the point, which I really like - not a lot of fluff. The book could give more examples of the diagrams and how to apply PROMAP, but overall the approach is easy to implement. We use flowcharts and UML, but not BPMN, so I did not dive deeply into the section on BPMN modeling but I expect to do that soon. The book explains UML well and we will adopt more of that going forward.

Overall, I would recommend this short and to the point book to anyone whose job it is to map out business processes or who works as a business analyst.

Introductory text

I didn't gather much "art" from this introductory text. It also concentrates quite heavily on UML. BPMN has a very small part. I was expecting more on how UML and BPMN might interact. However, on the positive side, it's a very approachable explanation of the model elements of several different model types. Just don't expect to receive answers for difficult modeling problems.

This is the reality of swinging. Most swingers are thought to be young and beautiful. The people in these photographs are older and mostly average looking. They are your friends and neighbors (yes, even if you go to church).

I thought the book was realistic and true to life. If you want to look at beautiful people having sex try porn. If you want to know what swinging is, then this is the book.

It's an interesting book, but feels to me as though the author was trying to portray the subject matter as seedier and a little grotesque. Is though the white-trashiest of imagery shows through most prominently. Other than that, an interesting study of the swing lifestyle. Not for the faint of heart! :-)

Dr. Michael VanRooyen is a professor at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. He is the founder of the Humanitarian Academy at Harvard, an educational program advancing humanitarian professionalism in the field of medicine. He is the author of the textbook Emergent Field Medicine, and has been published in over 70 publications on the topic of international emergency medicine and humanitarian assistance.

Dr. VanRooyen has served as an emergency physician in over thirty countries, including Rwanda, North Korea, Iraq, Darfur-Sudan, Somalia, Bosnia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He has advised as a relief expert for Oxfam, Physicians for Human Rights, Save the Children, and many other non-governmental organizations, and served as policy advisor to UN OCHA and the World Health Organization. He has consulted as a physician with NASA, the US Secret Service, and the US Public Health Service.

John Hanc is the author of eleven books, including The Coolest Race on Earth, an award-winning memoir about his experience running the Antarctic Marathon; and Not Dead Yet, the autobiography of Type-1 diabetic bike racer Phil Southerland. He is a frequent contributor to many publications including Newsday, The New York Times, and Smithsonian. He is also a professor of journalism and communications at the New York Institute of Technology.

Not Really

This is well written, but very vague. Tells more about the Boston bombing than anything else. Goes into great detail on personality traits needed to be a good emergency doctor. Save your buck and put it towards a longer more in depth book.

Not as gripping as I'd hoped.

It's a lot shorter than I was expecting it to be at 33 pages. And I know that's my fault for not reading that in the description, but I was shocked to discover after a few minutes that I was already a quarter of the way through the book. I was hoping we'd hear more stories of patients they'd seen and experiences they'd had, but instead it was more of a brief "This is why I became an ER doc" storyline. It's good in what it tells us and is well written and edited, but I was just hoping there would be more there. Having read "The Making of a Surgeon" by William Nolen, "Children's Hospital" and "Nurse" both by Peggy Anderson, I was expecting this to be something similar, but this is a much more condensed, basic discussion that seems to focus too much on the personality traits of what makes a good ER doc and not as much on the experiences and training. There should be a lot more there.

Five chapters, one worthwhile (chapter two, "One Doc's Journey to the ED"), one bordeline (on the Boston bombing), and three fillers. That is a lot of filler for a very short book. No theme connects the chapters, either.

About the Author

Beautiful and Informative Book

Innovations in many fields come not from man's imagination but by copying designs found in God's creation. That is the premise behind Made in Heaven by Ray Comfort and Jeffrey Seto and published by Master Books a division of New Leaf Publishing.

The writers have chosen 32 examples of intricate designs in nature and shown examples of how scientists have copied or are trying to copy them to make advances in medicine, energy, robotics, and even clothing. Some of the examples are fairly obvious like cat's eyes to make better road reflectors or have been used in other creation books like copying termite mounds to design more efficient air conditioning systems. Some of them like copying lotus leaves to make things more water repellent or copying moths eyes to make better solar cells were new to me. I found the idea of copying a mosquito's bite to try a make painless shots particularly interesting, partly because we tend to think of mosquitoes as worse than useless and partly because I know people who take daily insulin shots.

This book has beautiful pictures and easy to understand diagrams. The combination of a Apologist and an Aerospace Engineer as writers makes the book easy to understand, relevant for defending creation, scientifically accurate, and up to date. This book encourages you notice the amazing world around you and "look beyond the painting and see the Painter."

Even if it looks like one it is not just a children's book. The science is presented in an easy to understand way that doesn't make you feel like you're being talked down to. I found it as interesting and educational as my 16 year old son and my 9 year old nephew. It would make an excellent present for anyone interested in science, or any one you want to encourage to pay attention to God's design.

Marvelous book to learn how nature can help science advance.

When I received this book, I grabbed it to bring with me at the swimming lessons of my kids. I wanted to have the time to explore it and discover it while they swam. I was speechless on the quality of the text and images found in it. This book opens up a whole new windows on how we can adapt the features in nature for the use of our technology.

Right from the beginning of the book, you learn more about ants and can observe an astonishing picture of ants working together to make a bridge in order to have their colleagues cross between two leaves.

In this book, I learned that Kevlar is used to make bulletproof vest and that recently a Malagasy spider was discovered with a spider's web over ten times tougher than Kevlar. In clear explanation, you can learn how a spider's web can be so tough. Another section of the book that I really enjoyed reading was how butterflies can prevent counterfeit currency. A clear image illustrates how the iridescence of the blue morpho butterfly wings changes in color when you submerge them in water. And you also have an example of how polymer bills are using reflective technology with a 100$ Canadian dollar. *grin* Okay I will admit I am biased but I think it is totally cool that we have these in our money! And today, November 7th, we are introducing the new polymer 20$ bill on the market. You can read more about this new Canadian bill on CBC News.

Reading through this book and discover the information attached to the nature that surrounds us opens up a whole new way for me to see the greatness of God and how creative He was - and still is.

I find the book a bit harsh on the claim of "Man's Indiscriminate Stealing of God's Amazing Design". I totally support a book that highlights how science has found breakthrough by observing animals and nature but going to the point of accusing the scientists of stealing is a bit pushing it. It is true that most scientists do not recognize God's glory and His creation but at the same time I believe that God has put certain things in his Creation so that we can discover them and adapt it in our daily lives.

However, I find this book very informative and interesting to read. It is definitively a keeper to discover more on how nature can help science to advance. Fabulous examples are contained in this book and it is a great tool to have while homeschooling your kids or for simply learning more about how a scientist can make tremendous advancement by simply observing nature. This book can also be used as part of a science lessons with your kids so that they can learn more on how nature can help science in various ways.

For Every Age and Every Learning Level.

This book serves the same purpose as the signs that we find along our roadways. As we travel, they serve two functions; first, they point us in the right direction, and their second function is to lead us to the right destination.

"Made in Heaven" wonderfully points us in the right direction and leads us to the right conclusion that God is the Creator of all and that all the glory belongs to Him alone. This book points out and displays the glory of God because His invisible attributes, His eternal power, and His divine nature are clearly seen by everyone through what He has made.

Our family realized one great lesson through the reading of this book when we simply looked at the contents of the book as a whole. The context being that mankind is nothing more than an observer of what God has already done; man is only a discoverer of what already exists. Furthermore, as a result of our being made in the image of God, we are able to look into His creation in a small way and copy what He has done by invention through observation.

When you and your family read this book, you will discover an inescapable reality, that mankind steals from God that which He freely gave us to use and enjoy because man fails to give Him credit for His creation. Nevertheless, for the glory of God, the writers of this book have succeeded in their purpose for writing the book, which is to give credit where credit is due. This book contains 80 pages, which are broken down into 32 examples of how we use God's creation to invent things that improve and protect our lives.

I am glad that this book is a hardback book because it has a solid binding that will last for years to come. The font size is perfect and easy to read with the added benefit of BOLD typed headings, beautiful color photographs, and detailed drawings and diagrams.

This is surely a book for all ages! Within our household, we have one child entering college, one entering 11th grade and a 4th grader. I am currently in Seminary and my wife is a homeschool mom. This book is laid out in such a way that it contains information on each subject for every age and every learning level.
