There's a story beneath every statue

King Norodom’s Head is an entertaining, scholarly examination of the notable, yet often unnoticed, details scattered about the historically significant Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Boswell digs into the minutia, after brushing aside the lush overgrowth of the country’s colourful past.

My favourite moments of the book are when Boswell, after rendering the facts and glazing over all the zesty, pertinent and sometimes grim details of Cambodia’s past, soothes his readers with a witty digestif; personalising this scholarly endeavour. I especially liked the discussions with his wife, his distaste yet keen familiarity of everything KFC, not to mention his slap in the face to the excessively tasteless nature of the “Novye Russkie” wealth and their questionable intentions in/around the islands of Cambodia.

History buffs will be thrilled with the book. Travel readers interested in what stood on a significant piece of property before the Colonel seized it, instead of just how to get their bucket of chicken should also find this book a zinger. I learned a great deal and look forward to delving deeper into some of the sites unearthed in Boswell's fine excursion.

An unbiased telling of the establishment of Israel.

I tend towards books in the historical novel genre, and count among my favorite authors Herman Wouk and Leon Uris. "O Jerusalem!" was recommended to me by someone familiar with my interest in the history of Israel, and I was hesitant to read it at first, thinking that I didn't want to slog through some dry account of such a worthwhile topic.
Well, "dry" cannot be applied to any aspect of this book. Considering all of the college history books I've read, I think I can truly say that this is the best "true" historical telling of a topic that I've read...yet. The authors, in true journalistic form, did their research, and brought in those "human interest" aspects I so love in the historical novels. Their treatment of both the Arabs and the Jews is about as unbiased as one can be--I didn't see any blatant pandering to either side-- and felt that any (potentially) incindiary remarks were based wholly on historical track record (e.g., Arabs don't have a history--in Palestine--of cultivating the land, and this neglect is mentioned a few times). I recommend this book to anyone wishing for an in-depth (but not too technically deep!) look into the partition vote, the siege of Jerusalem, and the establishment of the State of Israel. ( As an aside: I'm not too interested in politics, but the political wrangling inherent in the entire partition process is quite fascinating. It goes to show that 'goodwill gestures' have about a million moving parts--not necessarily made out of love!).

One of the Greatest Books on Israel Ever Written

"O Jerusalem" is a classic. By focusing on one narrow yet vitally important aspect of the Arab-Jewish conflict surrounding the birth of Israel between WWII and 1948, the authors bring to life all the characters, good bad and neutral who played a role in the saga of Jerusalem. As readers of the book will discover, prior to 1948, Jerusalem was a city with a mixed Jewish-Arab population. The Arabs and Jews lived in relative harmony, sometimes in mixed neighborhoods. Under British rule, all religious groups had access to their own holy sights. The authors demonstrate how villaims like Husseini, the Mufti of Jerusalem, a rabid anti-semite who spent WWII hiding from the British in Berlin, brought ruin to the Arabs of Jerusalem. Indeed, the Arabs come across as the ultimate victims, which they were. Their victimizers were not the Jews, however, but their fellow Arabs. Ultimately, war comes in 1948 and the Jews are victorious in establishing the state of Israel. Many Arab residents of Jerusalem are forced from their homes either by the Israeli Defense Force, fellow Arabs or their own fears. Most wind up in the part of the city that has come to be known as "East Jerusalem". The old city, including the Jewish Quarter and the Western Wall is captured by Jordan and ALL Jews are expelled. The book describes in great detail, the tragic consequences of this conflict which was not wanted by the Jews, not wanted by their Arab neighbors but spurred on by interlopers like the Mufti, the British and many bad players fromt he Arab world like King Abdullah. It is a fair analysis. It does not make the Jews out to be saints nor does it portray all the Arabs as blood thirsty monsters. It lays blame where it belongs. Those pre-disposed to a revisionist view of Israel's birth will not appreciate this book because its fair analysis does not meet with revisionist ideology. But for anyone who wants to learn the truth about this conflict, this book is a must read.

Good, very readable history

Authors Lapierre and Collins have written a wonderful account of the establishment of the State of Israel. They have talked to people on all sides of the problem (there were more than just two sides) and, although not impartial, the end result is as gripping as it is valid. I have said that the authors have not reached an impartial result, and by this I mean that they tilt towards the Israeli side. I do, too, to be honest. But Lapierre and Collins show a lot of professionalism and at least seek balance. I recommend this title to anyone interested in the Middle East conflict, together with Dan Kurzman's "Genesis 1948: The First Arab-Israeli War."

Fun read!

For anyone who has ever been camping .... or thought about camping .... or wanted to know about camping .... this is a great little book of stories.

Actually, it is a great read for anyone who is interested in just plain human stories. I enjoyed reading about the various people and incidednts Sunny encountered and experienced while being a campground host. Sunny's writing is engaging and draws you right into the stories. My only complaint is that it was over too fast. :)

I hope she shares mores of her camping experiences with us soon....

Another fun and informative read from a very interesting author. When one is in the planning stages of escaping to the road, every realistic opinion is a huge help. As Sunny says, too often all one reads about RVing is glowing accounts of all the good times, with not enough of reality thrown in. I am coming to trust this author for her truthfulness.

The goal of this course was to provide the background necessary to initiate work on a PhD thesis in partial differential equations. The level of the book is aimed at beginning graduate students. Prerequisites include a truly advanced calculus course and basic complex variables, but no knowledge is required of Lebesgue integration theory or functional analysis.

An extremely well written introduction to PDEs

An Introduction to Partial Differential Equations by Renardy and Rogers is a very well written introduction to the huge and important area of PDEs. It covers both the classical and modern PDE theory on, compared with other expositions, a relatively low number of pages. Nevertheless, Renardy and Rogers succeed in introducing the most important concepts and explaining their interrelations, so that alltogether, the book provides the reader with the background necessary for diving safely into the more advanced literature on the subject.
It was a pleasure for me to read the book, and after nearly four years of work in PDEs, it is still my reference of choice. I would highly recommend it for students of mathematics and for mathematically inclined engineering students.

A very good book to learn about partial differential eqn's.

I found what I was looking for in this book to know enough about this huge theory of Partial Differential Equations. Contents of each chapter is clearly developed and no essential point is missed. If you are someone who seriously wants to learn more and apply PDE theory in your research, this book is worth picking. Although the title alludes to an introductory book bearing a simple approach, this book is far more than an introduction, and I would say some little background in PDE's would help.

It’s like leaping from gem to gem in terms of new ...

As I am not trained in psychoanalysis, I could not follow everything in this marvelous book, and yet I found one striking and valuable insight after another. It’s like leaping from gem to gem in terms of new understandings. Altogether I find this a stimulating, thought provoking, insight-provoking piece of writing. I appreciate the author’s quoting Freud and especially also Nietzsche. I wish I had encountered something like this earlier in my career as a psychologist.

Through Pederson’s eyes, Freud’s thinking turns out to be different from what I would have thought. Acknowledging “constitution,” or what I’d call temperament and today would be called genetics, Freud was of the view that we don’t all have the same constitution and so face different challenges toward growth, different ways of being persons when we overcome those challenges, and traverse different experiential paths in getting there. Therapy does not set out to “cure constitution;” we become better at being the kind of person we were born to be – we don’t get cured out of that into being a different kind of person. This is not the monolithic model of life I would have expected from psychoanalysis.
Again different from what I expected, Pederson takes on the idea of “bisexuality” in Freud’s work, not as the literal having sex with both genders that I think of when I hear the word, but as a way of talking about two different forms of “constitution:” one that is centered on personal assertion in the world, the other centered on hearing others and relatedness. While we all have elements of both, some are born to live out life from one frame of engaging the world, others from the other. Pederson goes on to elaborate active and passive versions of both, making for a rich model with which to understand the complex world of human beings we are part of.

He also takes on “castration” and the Oedipal complex in ways I would not have expected. Paraphrasing it as best I can, what gets “castrated” is not the physical penis but the grandiosity of early childhood that envisions all of life centering around and responsive to self. The Oedipal phase is a three-person drama that develops while that self-as-center is still in full swing, with its grandiosity and magical thinking. After the Oedipal phase, a child moves into the “Father complex” phase when that grandiosity and magical thinking no longer dominate, when identification with the adult parent in terms of learning skills and taking on responsibilities and a place in the adult world become the focus. Something has been cut down to size, namely the grandiosity of earlier life, and in its place is a sense of the adult world as something to understand in its own right, something that lies in the future but is bridged by identifying with the father who has already taken a place in that world. We may not yet have the skills or position, but through identification we can feel we will have both eventually. In Pederson’s work the adult world comes into view in a way it often does not in other therapeutic models.
I find this valuable. Unlike relational theorizing, this work puts us in the adult world, the historical world, in which adult life is lived out and for which we are responsible as adults. I don't find that developed in "relational thinking," though that may be a limitation of my reading. Given those limitations, I find his focus on the adult world and on drives a relief after being around the world of pre-Oedipal/relational thinking for some time.

I recall my early days of reading a bit about drives, and in those days the drives did seem to be cast in both body terms and relational terms, with the body terms being relational and vice versa. That seems to come alive here once again. Also the imaginal layer in all of this comes through in his writing; my sense of it being that body and world meet in a realm of imaging, however unconscious or conscious, prior to language and social systems, and that too seems part of what has been left out of recent developments in psychology, at least in my readings anyway.
I much appreciate this book. In it the mental powers of a true intellectual are unleashed, someone who is also a sensitive and deeply engaging therapist. The author mentions that he will be producing another book. I look forward to it.

A fantastic detailed guide

I have read many books like this (Seth, etc.) but the difference withi this book is that it is focussed on giving the reader specific exercises, along with examples and instructions, on how to "consciously create" your world.
The changes are almost immediate, since you are actually changing your thoughts on a minute by minute, day by day basis.
I have recently read Wayne Dyer's book, "The Power of Intention", which, as another reviewer stated, is very similar and draws upon this heavily. However, this material, possibly because it is coming from non-physical beings, is more succinct, clearer, and more comprehensive.
As Abraham says (I am paraphrasing): there is a small and growing number of people on earth who know that they create their own reality. Of those, there is an even smaller who are looking for the mechanisms of how to do this. It is this latter group for whom the book was written.
If you already know that you create your own reality, but want to know how to change the way you do it, and refine your methods, then this book is for you.

THE best new thought book I've ever read

After scouring new age book stores for years, and reading literally hundreds of books, I happened on this book (and Vol. 1) and I honestly say my life has changed for the better in so many ways. This is absolutely the most workable, practical sky-is-the-limit philosophy I've ever encountered. And thankfully every word of it has translated into whole new vistas of joy in my life (and about 20 other friends who I have turned on to it). I have watched it change lives when applied even to a small degree. If you want new age dogma, or complicated ritual and significance, go elsewhere. If you want something that works (and it's easy and fun!) THIS IS IT.

THE manual for conscious creation.

This book contains and further elaborates on most of the information given in the first book (vol I) except the planetary alignment stuff. The information in this and volume I is extremely practical information, as opposed to very theoretical. Again like volume I this book gives you the mechanics of conscious creation and how the universe works to bring things into physical manifestation. This book gives back meaning by showing you every thought you have has an impact in your life and the life of others. This book can show you why your life is a product of your thoughts and beliefs. If I was given the choice of only one book it would be this one.
